The Art of Happiness in Unfinished Things

A lived-in desk beside a window with half-finished Maggi, an open packet of munchies, coffee, handwritten notes, and a movie playing on a laptop

When I look around my space, I realise how many things I have left unfinished.

  • A half-eaten Maggi.
  • A cup of coffee that went cold.
  • A packet of munchies left open.
  • A book I stopped somewhere in the middle.
  • A movie I never finished.
  • A piece of work I kept postponing.

Sometimes, I left them unfinished because I got busy. Sometimes, because something else happened and sometimes, simply because I didn’t feel like finishing them anymore.

But today, while sitting beside a half-finished Maggi and a cold cup of coffee, I started wondering:

What exactly did I lose by leaving them unfinished?

The Maggi lost its warmth. The coffee lost its taste. But perhaps I gained something else.

A reminder that life doesn’t always happen in complete chapters.

We start conversations and don’t finish them. We make plans that never happen. We begin journeys and change our destinations. We meet people who become unfinished stories. Some dreams remain unfinished.

And maybe that’s okay.

Because perhaps happiness isn’t always in finishing everything.

Maybe sometimes, happiness is in looking at what remains unfinished and saying, “I was there. I started something. I lived that moment.”

The cold coffee is no longer the coffee I made an hour ago. The half-finished Maggi will never taste exactly the same.

But they carry something more than their taste.

They carry a moment I almost forgot.

Maybe the art of happiness is not learning how to complete everything, but learning to find beauty in the things that were never completed.
